The origin of Anant Temple back to the late 12th century, during the Kadamba dynasty. Originally situated in Cuncolim, it was relocated to Savoi-Verem in the 16th century due to religious persecution by the Portuguese. The temple is a symbol of resilience, having survived attempts to suppress Hindu practices in Goa. It is believed that the worship of Vishnu has been a tradition in this area for over a millennium, with various ancient images of Vishnu discovered nearby, further emphasizing its historical significance.
The Anant Temple is architecturally distinctivefine example of traditional Goan temple design, built on a waterlogged area, which enhances its serene ambiance. The temple complex includes a beautifully decorated Deepastambha, or lamp tower, which is particularly striking when illuminated during festivals. The Sabha Mandap, or assembly hall, is spacious and adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant paintings depicting various mythological scenes. The main idol, known as the Bhogshayan Murti, depicts Lord Vishnu reclining on the serpent Ananta (Shesh Naag). This unique representation showcases Vishnu in a resting posture, symbolizing his role as the preserver of the universe. The idol is intricately carved from black stone and features several divine figures, including Goddess Lakshmi seated at Vishnu’s feet, and Brahma emerging from a lotus that grows from Vishnu’s navel.
The temple complex also includes smaller shrines dedicated to other deities, such as Shantadurga and Kamini. A notable architectural feature is the two-story lamp tower, which is beautifully decorated with oil lamps during festivals. The surrounding landscape is lush with greenery, providing a tranquil setting for worship and reflection
