This ancient Hindu temple, dedicated to Lord Naguesh, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, is one of the oldest in Goa and holds considerable archaeological importance.

The temple’s history dates back to the 7th century, with evidence suggesting that the Naga cult was worshipped in this region as early as the 4th century AD. The current structure of the temple was built in 1413 during the rule of King Veer Pratap Devaraya of the Vijayanagar Empire.

One of the most striking features of the Nageshi Temple is its “Swayambhu” nature, meaning the Shiva linga was discovered by a cowherd who noticed a cow from his herd regularly showering milk on a stone in the forest. This miraculous discovery has contributed to the temple’s reputation for its divine powers.

The temple’s architecture is a blend of ancient and modern styles, with a five-storied lamp tower or Deepstambha and a historic old water tank being the major attractions. The temple’s sabhamandap features exquisite wooden carvings depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as wooden images of Astadikpalaka and Gandharva.

Unlike many other temples in the area, the Nageshi Temple remained unaffected by the religious persecution of the Portuguese rulers in the 16th century due to its location in the Antruj of Ponda Mahal, which was not under Portuguese domain at the time.

The temple celebrates several important festivals throughout the year, including the Anguish Satrap in November, the 8-day Kartik Poornima, Chaitra Poornima, and Mahashivratri. Devotees flock to the temple to seek the blessings of Lord Naguesh and to marvel at its architectural splendor.
