Shri Shantadurga Kunkalikarin Temple is located in Fatorpa, Quepem, South Goa about 52 Km from the state capital Panaji. Originally situated in Cuncolim village, Shri Shantadurga Kunkalikarin temple was relocated to Fatorpa in the 16th century due to religious persecution by the Portuguese. The goddess herself is said to have commanded this move. The temple was later reconstructed during the reign of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, following its destruction during the Portuguese invasion. The temple is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of resistance against colonial oppression, as it played a role in the Cuncolim revolt of 1583, which aimed to protect Hindu traditions and practices in Goa.
Architecturally, the temple is an excellent example of traditional Goan temple design. The temple complex includes a stunning Deepastambha, or lamp tower, which is especially beautiful when illuminated during festivals. The Sabha Mandap, or assembly hall, is spacious and features intricate carvings and vibrant paintings depicting various mythological scenes.
