Exploring Tiracol Fort
Perched atop a scenic hilltop at the northernmost tip of Goa, Tiracol Fort stands as a testament to the state’s rich history and architectural heritage. Originally constructed in the 17th century by Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle of Sawantwadi, this imposing fort has witnessed the rise and fall of various rulers, each leaving their mark on its weathered walls.
The fort, also known as Terekhol Fort, derives its name from the Konkani words “Tir” meaning “furthest point” and “Khol” meaning “deep,” referring to its location at the confluence of the Tiracol River and the Arabian Sea. Over the centuries, it changed hands multiple times, with the Marathas, Portuguese, and British all vying for control of this strategic location. In 1746, the fort was captured by the Portuguese under Dom Pedro Miguel de Almeida, who renamed it the “Holy Trinity Fortress of Tiracol.” The Portuguese extensively renovated and fortified the structure, making it an integral part of their maritime defenses until 1961.
A Luxurious Transformation
In recent years, Tiracol Fort has undergone a remarkable transformation, with the creation of the Fort Tiracol Heritage Hotel. This unique property offers visitors a chance to experience the fort’s rich history while enjoying modern comforts and amenities. The hotel features seven renovated rooms and suites, each with stunning views of the river and sea, as well as a tavern, restaurant, and garden café serving delicious Goan cuisine.

- Design: The fort features a square layout with thick walls that are approximately 4 feet thick, providing robust defense capabilities. Its elevated position offers commanding views of the surrounding landscape, making it an ideal lookout point.
- Bastions and Ramparts: The fort includes several bastions and ramparts that were used for mounting cannons and observing enemy movements. These structures enhance the fort’s military functionality while adding to its architectural grandeur.
- Church of St. Anthony: Within the fort’s courtyard lies the Church of St. Anthony, built by the Portuguese after they captured the fort in 1746. The church features Mannerist and Rococo architectural styles, with intricate designs and a beautiful altar, reflecting the cultural influences of the time.
